Honor Code

Honor Code Violations and Consequences - Teacher/Student Overview Students who violate the Honor Code will not receive credit for the assignment, test, etc. Students committing a second infraction of the Honor Code during his/her tenure at Banneker will receive an uninvite letter for the following school year. Students committing their second infraction in the senior year will be excluded from the graduation ceremony.

In addition to the above stated consequences, the following will also apply:
• The student becomes ineligible to make the honor roll and the National Honor Society*.
*Note: Consequences may differ regarding other honor societies.
• The student will receive a grade of Unsatisfactory (U) in citizenship.
• The violation will be documented in the student behavior tracker.
• Consideration of student acceptance into AP/IB programs can be affected.

Teacher Protocol for Honor Code Violation
1. Write a discipline referral for Honor Code violation and submit to Administration. Keep a copy for your records.
2. Discuss the Honor Code violation with the student. Take notes on anything the student says pertinent to the infraction. Be sure to include this information on the discipline referral.
3. Call Parent to inform of Honor Code violation and the resulting consequences.
a. Report the infraction and any pertinent information from your discussion with the
student.
b. Discuss the penalties for the first infraction which are:
• The student will not receive credit for the assignment, test, etc.
• The student becomes ineligible to make the honor roll and the National Honor
Society*.
*Note: Consequences may differ regarding other honor societies.
• The student will receive a grade of Unsatisfactory (U) in citizenship.
• The violation will be documented in the student behavior tracker.
• Consideration of student acceptance into AP/IB programs can be affected.
If this is a second infraction:
• Student will be uninvited to attend Banneker for next school year.
• Students who are seniors will lose the privilege of participating in Banneker’s
graduation exercises.
If you wish to appeal the honor code violation, you may email Ms. Berger at
Anita.Berger@k12.dc.gov to request a meeting with the Honor Code Committee.
Someone will then contact you directly about next steps.
c. Follow-up the phone call with an email to summarize the discussion.
4. If necessary, attend the Honor Committee meeting to present supporting evidence of an Honor Code violation.
Note: Please submit Honor Code Infractions in a timely manner, within 3 days of noticing the infraction.
